For the first time I understand the power of shooting on a digital set. The best part of the last three Star Wars movies was picking apart all the shots, what was CG and what wasn't. Fountain didn't have that problem, the green screen scenes were seemless. There really is so much potential for expanding story telling.
The Fountain also stressed a point I had noticed some time ago, Hollywood doesn't do special effects right and I think they do it on purpose. You know how they always have those behind the scenes specials, and the "how we made the matrix bullet time" dvd extras, well it's all marketing and they expand that into the movie too. At this point special effects are a star in the movie and like any star they get to show off in the movie....they make sure they stand out.
The first time I noticed this was after seeing (against my will, i'm sure) "Multiplicty" sometime after seeing "City of Lost Children". Both movies used the same cloning technique to duplicate one of the actors into a series of twins. "City of Lost Children" was made first, and used the effect without fanfare (well, that i'm aware of) while "Multiplicty" had endless specials about how great this new effect was...but in "City" you can't tell any thing has been changed, but in "Multiplicty" it was clear every time they had altered a scene. I really think they want to stress the effects...some kinda "look what i can do" thing.
